Climbing High

We were back on the activities the day after we arrived in El Nido.

Four of us decided that we would do a canopy walk in the afternoon. We decided that as late as possible in the afternoon was best to try to avoid the heat as much as possible and we would say that this was probably a good choice because even at the time we picked we were incredibly hot and sweaty and our guide was sitting in the shade of a tree while he waited for us to take our photos.

The canopy walk itself was fun, but not very long. We got ourselves kitted up in harnesses and helmets and walked around the corner to start the walk. We think that the safety gear gave more an illusion of safety rather than actually providing much of it because the only part we were actually hooked into was a rising bridge that was actually enclosed on both sides, granted it was a very wobbly experience walking across it.

The rest of the walk consisted of climbing up steps made from metal pipes that made your feet feel like they angled backwards when you stepped on them. We decided it was better to slip this way than forwards down the rest of the steep flights, as it was highly likely this could happen because they were very slippy steps, and agreed that the footing was not comfortable but probably the most ideal.

The highlight of the walk was the spiders nets that allows amazing views of the sea and town. This was the only reason for the walk really, and was literally just some netting suspended between the rocks we had climbed up. Again, we were not strapped into this despite the decorative harness, we were told to just walk on if we weren’t scared so that’s exactly what we did. They were cool views and a fun little outing for the afternoon.

That evening, we decided to participate in a hostel activity on the roof top. Georgia sat this one out as she was feeling unwell and the rest of us split into two teams of me and Lydia and Ellie and Leyan to play beer pong. This is an interesting choice of activity for me but it ended up being a fun activity, although Lydia had to stop drinking all the beers our opponents landed because she was getting too drunk.

Miraculously, me and Lydia actually won our first round, even against an opponent who was convinced he was better than us. It was a very sweet victory. I even got a ribbon necklace for our victory. Leyan and Ellie went out in the first round and we lost our second, although for us I don’t think this was such a bad thing as Lydia needed no more beer.

We didn’t stay up too late though, and laughed when people asked what we were doing after the tournament because it was the activity. I wasn’t too disappointed that we all decided to go to bed. Sleep is always a vital commodity.
